Know What You Need

Once you've decided that you want to lose weight, for whatever the reason, the first thing you need to do to ensure diet success is set a weight loss goal. How can your weight loss journey end up anywhere if you don't have a destination?

Set Realistic Goals

The goal you set must also be realistic. Use the free, personalized tools at mypyramid.gov to figure out what your goal weight ought to be, then set a time line, something rough but achievable.

Get Rid of the Temptation

If you're truly seeking diet success, you have to set yourself up for it, not for failure! That means opening your fridge, freezer and cupboards and getting rid of the junk you know will ruin your diet. Cookies? Gone! Ice cream! Gone! Chips? Gone!

Don't Buy MORE Temptation!

Now that you've rid the house of all of the terrible dietary temptations, don't buy more! Avoid the middle aisles at the grocery store where all of the junk food is stored, and stay strong!

Ditch the Negatives

When you announce your diet to your friends, pay attention to those who make supportive comments, and ignore those who have anything negative to say. In fact, this is the ideal time to purge your life of any frenemy who might be lurking on the sidelines.

Skip the Weigh Ins

I know what you’re thinking: how can you measure your diet success without a scale? Let me explain. Weighing yourself every day, or even every week, isn't the best indicator of your success. Consider how you feel, how your clothes fit, and how you look to yourself, then weigh yourself every two weeks to track your pounds progress.

Do the Math

A successful weight loss diet truly boils down to a math problem. If you want to lose weight, the calories you consume MUST be less than the calories you burn. Ensure your diet success by counting and keeping track of calories. It really, truly can be that simple!

Expect Plateaus

Even the most stead-fast dieter will tell you of the horror and frustration of a plateau, that period of a few weeks during which you'll follow your diet and exercise, and the scale will refuse to budge. Stick it out! Don't break your diet or quit exercising, because that plateau is only temporary.

Celebrate Success!

At every weight loss milestone you pass, be sure to celebrate, just a little, to keep you motivated. Reward yourself with a new pair of jeans, or a new workout ensemble, or a night out. But be sure to mark the milestones somehow... they're diet successes, so be sure to celebrate them!

With so many ways to ensure diet success, you're sure to, well, succeed! Tee shirt or no, don't forget it's important to celebrate success, and I'd love to cheer with you! Which of these tips do you find most helpful? Or is there something else you can suggest to stay on track and have diet success? Do tell!

Weight yourself can work for you or against your. I use to forego weight myself for several weeks. Then I would like a nice surprise. Now I am having a harder challenge sticking to the plan so weighing myself is a reminder.
