With spring and summer just around the corner, extreme dieting has become somewhat of a trend. Men and especially women are taking extreme measures in order to get the desired summer body and most of them are searching for the easy way out. While fad diets can help you loose a couple of pounds pronto, they are very damaging to your body in the long run and can actually have the opposite effect. Therefore, instead of turning to extreme dieting, try to change your lifestyle gradually and add more exercise to your daily routine.

1

Muscle Loss

A lot of crash diets and extreme dieting in general can limit the amount of calories you can take and set a very strict eating schedule, down to what you can consume and when you can consume it. While that is an effective way to watch your calorie intake, your body will search for other ways to get its energy. Your body will see your muscles as an alternative source of energy and begin digesting them down. This muscle loss is very detrimental to any of your efforts for weight loss, as muscles aid you in burning calories even when you are resting.

2

Slower Metabolism

Consequently, the new structured food intake and the break down of muscles significantly disrupt your natural metabolism. Due to the low calorie intake, your body goes into starvation mode and, as mentioned before, your muscle mass dramatically decreases. Generally the more muscle mass you have, the higher your metabolism and the less muscle mass you have, the lower your metabolism. When you connect the dots, crash diets don’t seem so helpful anymore.

3

Hair Loss

The malnutrition from the fad diets can definitely be seen in your outer appearance. When you don’t get enough protein in your diet, your luscious hair loses its health and suddenly becomes very dry and brittle. This leads to a lot of breakage and long lasting damage that takes a while to recover from. While you are trying to improve your outer appearance with extreme measures, you are only damaging it in ways you don’t quite understand.

4

Malnutrition

Many weight loss diets require you to consume only one food type, which can deprive you of many other essential vitamins and minerals necessary for regular functioning. This can quickly result in malnutrition, which can have detrimental effects on your reproductive and endocrine systems. For example, a deficiency in calcium, potassium, vitamin B and zinc can lead to problems with your menstrual cycle and fertility chances.

5

Lack of Energy

A drastic change in your diet can really affect your normal functioning throughout the day. A low calorie intake can leave you light headed, disorientated and weak. You might notice that you are not able to complete tasks as efficiently as you used to and you might even lose any interest in activities that you used to enjoy before. Therefore, before going on a diet, think about the simple things that you are going to have to give up.

6

Stress

Drastic limitations of food intake can result in a change of personality. A person who is usually friendly and energetic will suddenly feel more irritated, stressed out and depressed. Thus, if you are already going through a stressful period in your life, avoid putting even more pressure on yourself and focus on your well being.

7

Gain in Weight

Extreme diets are known for their fast results, but most of the weight loss comes from water weight, which is why individuals always end up gaining the weight back. When you restrict your body and don’t satisfy your cravings, it is much easier to lose control and binge on junk food, but doing things the gradual way and slowly taking out unhealthy foods from your diet can completely change your lifestyle for the better.

Remember, when it comes to weight loss, health should come first. If you are not willing to work hard for what you want and instead choose the easy way out, you will never be able to achieve permanent results you could be proud of. What are some of your personal tips on weight loss regarding the diet?
