7 Foods That Are Surprisingly Healthy for You ...

By Gillian

There are so many foods that are surprisingly healthy for you! Most people think the below are bad for you or contain bad fats, when in fact that is wrong. The below foods actually contain healthy components, if consumed in moderation! Research some great recipes which include these foods, and indulge! These are the foods that are surprisingly healthy for you ladies!

1 Anchovies

Anchovies This is one of those foods that are surprisingly healthy. The salty little fish may seem more of a sodium bomb than a health food, but anchovies come packed with omega-3 fatty acids. This is thought to offer protection against everything from heart disease to depression. Anchovies deliver as many grams of omega-3s as salmon and nearly twice as much as halibut. Of course, few people are going to eat the same serving size of anchovies as they would a piece of salmon, but you can add them to many things to increase your consumption.

2 Coffee

Coffee Don’t give up that coffee just yet! Coffee’s reputation took a nosedive a few decades ago when research linked its consumption with pancreatic cancer, yet recent studies have not found the same connection. Some studies note that an excess of 500 to 600 milligrams of caffeine a day, which is roughly five to six cups of brewed coffee, may cause insomnia, nervousness and restlessness. From lowering cancer and diabetes risk to decreasing depression and lengthening longevity, for some coffee may be a bona fide health food.

3 Eggs

Eggs In the past, concerns about cholesterol made eggs a big no-no. There have been many studies since those dark days, suggesting that eggs are not that horrible for you and won't make your cholesterol skyrocket. Which is great news, because eggs are incredible little powerhouses of nutrients. For 70 calories, you get six grams of excellent protein, plus a healthy number of other important nutrients.

4 Wine

Wine Red wine has been making waves lately. Of course drinking alcohol isn’t healthy, except for when it’s red wine (consumed in moderation). Alcohol and antioxidants in red wine may help prevent heart disease by increasing levels of "good" cholesterol and protecting against artery damage. Now ladies, that being said, too much alcohol can have harmful effects as well, so moderation is the key.

5 Watermelon

Watermelon Now I doubt that any of you think that watermelon is junk food, but it might surprise you to learn that it really is a nutritional. Watermelon has 92% water, which is a high percentage for food, but watermelon is often passed over as nutritionally insipid. In fact, it is an excellent source of the powerful antioxidant lycopene, in addition to being a good source of potassium, vitamin A and vitamin C.

6 Avocado

Avocado I have heard people say they can’t eat avocado because it’s high in fat. Avocados are rich in heart-healthy fat and contain active compounds that may help prevent cancer. This isn’t bad fat! They are loaded with antioxidants, including familiar disease-fighting compounds such as lutein, beta-carotene, and vitamin E.

7 Popcorn

Popcorn Never feel bad about eating popcorn with a movie again! Turns out, popcorn is one of the most healthy snacks you can have. Popcorn has one of the highest levels of polyphenols of any plant food – including most fruit! Popcorn has more antioxidants in total than other snack foods that you can consume and it also has quite a bit of fiber. Don’t buy processed or microwavable popcorn! The healthiest popcorn is made yourself the old fashioned way: on the stovetop or with a popcorn maker, without the added butter and salt.

Have you ate any of these and felt guilty after? No need to anymore! These are all snacks and foods that have a huge misconception tagged with them, but no more. Is there a food that you just love but don’t know if it is healthy or not? What about a healthy snack to share with me?
