It's pretty important to learn how to snack in a balanced way. If we’re all being honest with ourselves, we all have to admit that no matter how strict and healthy our diets our, we love to have a cheeky snack every now and then! Snacking is something that all people just love to do, and the great thing is that it doesn’t always have to be an unhealthy addition to your eating routine. Just because the word "snack" has become associated with unhealthy junk foods, it doesn’t mean that you can’t incorporate more balanced snacking in to your everyday diet. Here are just of few of the ways for how to snack in a balanced way.
1. Wait for Hunger
Before you decide to have a snack, make sure that you are genuinely hungry. A good way to test this is to drink a glass of water and then wait 15 to 20 minutes. If you no longer fancy a snack, then it means that you were thirsty rather than hungry! Thirst can often manifest itself in the form of hunger pangs, so don’t let your body trick you into snacking when you don’t need to! 2. Smart Choices
Snacking in and of itself is fine, as long as you make the right decisions about what to eat. Chocolate and other sugary things are obviously a bad idea, but you can curb your snack cravings by feasting on a handful of nuts and other mixes that include things like dried fruits. They also give you a hit of sweetness without being too caloric.
3. Portion Control
It doesn’t take much for a snack to turn in to a full blown extra meal, and this is all down to portion size and portion control. Be strict with yourself when it comes to snacking. Always take a portion away with you rather than taking the entire box or packet, because before you know it, the entire thing will be gone!
4. Use a Plate
A way to help portion control is to use a plate rather than picking things out of boxes and packets. Having your snack laid out in front of you is a much more sensible way to eat it than pulling hidden and uncounted amounts from packets!
5. Mindful Munching
Make sure that your snack is satisfying and not senseless by taking the time to think about what you are eating and enjoying it. If you sit down in front of the TV and switch off your mind as you snack, you will end up eating much more than you should. Dedicate a few minutes to enjoying a snack and then move on.
6. Stay Busy
To put it simply, the busier you keep yourself, the less inclined you are going to be to snack throughout the day. The majority of people turn to snacking out of boredom rather than out of hunger, so stop this tendency in its tracks by making sure that the only free time you have is spent sleeping!
